Today, I wanted to talk a little about Fret Nice; A game from the up and coming independent game developer Pieces Interactive, i recently had a chance to sit down with an early prototype of the game and i have to say, it was a very enjoyable experience filled with some of the best presentation i've ever seen in an indie game, or any game for that matter. did i mention it uses the Guitar controller from all the guitar games? get ready for something totally new and original.
The game, targeted for release on XBLA, PSN, WiiWare and PC, has been praised by a handful of independent game organizations and rightly so. let me walk you through the prototype: After viewing a delightful intro screen, you'll be treated to a neat menu which, like most of the game features really good, catchy tunes that will stick in you're head for days, assuming you've already set up you're guitar (from the moment i plugged in my guitar, everything already worked perfectly with no setup), you'll select start and be taken to a quick tutorial where you're shown some basic tips and controls; holding the top two fret buttons move you're character leftward and the bottom three fret buttons move you character rightward, while holding any of the movement buttons you can strum up and down to run. to jump, you'll give the guitar a little upward shake. now, what about enemies? well, this is where the fun starts; to perform an attack you need to jump, and then while in the air play notes by holding fret buttons and strumming the strum bar, different enemies will require you to play notes differently and use combinations of notes etc. overall its a really fun system that allows you to get creative, and often times i find my self exaggerating what is required and rocking out with the awesome background track.of course, it wouldn't be a good game if it wasn't paired with good level design, and i'm happy to say that it is. like in the above screenshot you'll find awesome level design and great gameplay extras that you'll have to experience for yourself.i know this has been a very positive review thus far but, i want everyone to know that it does have some downsides, mainly in little control hiccups, and small things that i'm sure will be fixed in the final version (keep in mind it is a prototype for the moment). to conclude i urge everyone with a USB guitar to check this game out. i'll end with a small trailer for the game, enjoy.
